I am making the world better by creating widely used Python libraries and toolsets including:

  • SQLAlchemy
  • Mako Templates
  • Alembic Migrations
  • Dogpile Caching

I produce and support these in the interests of advancing what I feel are good software practices and of course the amazing Python programming language. I respond to many dozens of user questions per month, in an effort to both support the userbase as well as to pull in new ideas and improvements into the software based on the challenges the userbase is facing.

My interest is in advancing the field of day-to-day software development by example - years ago, when handwringing over how terrible ORMs are was prominent, I sought to show the world how good database abstractions and ORMs could be if done well - nine years later it's clear that we've succeeded, judging by the enthusiasm of our users.

Gittip funds are used to pay for project hosting, which includes Linode and Amazon EC2 hosts to support our Jenkins continuous integration environment as well as other hosting fees.

The funds also serve as supplemental income. I have spent many years as a freelance contractor in the interests of maintaining independent ownership over my projects and to be able to devote enough time to them - for these years I've effectively been gainfully employed only part time. As of 2014 I have finally found a full time employer that will continue to provide resources to let my projects be developed independently and freely, however Gittip funds continue to be helpful in making up for many years of partial income.

Thanks very much to all those who support me, either via Gittip, pull requests, helping out on the mailing list or IRC, I couldn't do it without all of you.
